The Importance of Winter

Indigenous knowledge teaches that winter is not a season to resist, but a time to slow down, reflect, and reconnect. Many Indigenous educators describe winter as a period for storytelling, rest, and strengthening relationships with community and self.
Rather than measuring wellness through productivity, these teachings emphasize balance, patience, and care. Honouring winter means listening to what our bodies and minds need and recognizing that rest is essential to long-term well-being.
Indigenous seasonal knowledge reminds us that health is cyclical and deeply connected to the natural world. Making room for these teachings supports more holistic and humane approaches to wellness for everyone.
