Hamilton Health Sciences has launched its first Indigenous Health Plan, a meaningful commitment to advancing reconciliation, equity, and culturally safe care across all HHS sites.
This plan was shaped with Indigenous partners and guided by the principles of Two Row Wampum, Dish with One Spoon, and the TRC Calls to Action, and it outlines real actions to transform care.
The Plan includes:
Cultural Safety Training for all staff, physicians, learners, and volunteers
Indigenous Recruitment & Retention strategies to support Indigenous health professionals in meaningful careers
Indigenous Healing Spaces at hospitals where cultural practices are welcomed and supported
Partnerships with Indigenous vendors, communities & leadership to build care together
Ongoing reporting and accountability to track progress and honour commitments
This plan recognizes that reconciliation isn’t a checklist; it’s long-term work rooted in trust and community leadership. Initiatives like this are important to build a health system where Indigenous people are seen, heard and cared for.
