Culturally safe healthcare means providing care in a way that respects Indigenous identities, cultures, and lived experiences, while actively addressing racism and power imbalances within healthcare systems. It goes beyond cultural awareness by requiring health providers and institutions to reflect on their own practices and how these may impact Indigenous patients.
For many Indigenous peoples, health is deeply connected to culture, community, and the land. When healthcare ignores these connections, it can be unsafe or harmful. Indigenous-led models of care show that when culture is centred, patients experience greater trust and continuity in care.
Cultural safety is especially important in areas like maternity care, where Indigenous women have reported feeling dismissed or culturally unsupported within mainstream systems. Integrating Indigenous knowledge, practices, and leadership helps create care that is respectful and relevant.
